The Lola is Back!

The Lola Ferrari Open Classic Memorial Tournament returns after more than a decade away, and what a decade it has been. Who could have foreseen such unbelievable events taking place since we last stepped onto a fairway to compete for one of the greatest prizes in sport!

‘Golf course owner Donald Trump becoming leader of the Free World, Tiger Woods winning just one major and former Royal Captain of the R&A Prince Andrew being revealed as a sweaty nonce, to name but a few (well maybe the last one was predictable).’

None of the above have been invited to play in Lola 2022 which takes place 8-10 September on Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, even if they do have a holiday home just up the road.

Aboyne GC, Banchory GC and Ballater GC will play hosts to this year’s competition over 72 holes, which shall be competed for by the reigning champion and 3 times winner The Bear, former 2 times champions Tullminator & Kitten, former champion (only once) The Wallace. We’re delighted to welcome back 2006 Runner Up Adz and Wooden Spoon winner from 2004 Robbie The Mower, and making up the magnificent field of 7, a Lola Virgin (even though he was invited many times before), Glasgow’s very own Pistol Pete.

May the best man/bloke/chap win!

Review of 2010 in Words & Pictures

A Belated & Brief Review of Lola 2010

Lola 2010 headed to sunny Spain, or to be precise, Catalunya.

The usual over exuberance by the main travelling contingent saw a high spirited and vodka-induced flight from Edinburgh, which resulted in another classic scenario from the usually resilient ‘Bear’ who collapsed/blacked-out at Girona Airport baggage carousel!

Day 1: Club Golf D’Aro (6004m) – Very pleasant hilltop course with some great scenery. Following tapas and ‘hair o’ dogs’, an insistent Tullminator refused any buggy transportation in favour of walking the course, whilst Kitten did likewise in the other group. Their decision would soon be regretted as the mountainous terrain and Spanish sun rapidly took its toll on the shattered pair. The fresh-faced American took a commanding lead with 37pts, Sugar 33pts, Wallace 29pts, Tull 26pts with Kitten & Bear on 20pts!

Day 2: PGA Catalunya, Stadium Course (6104m) – Splendid golfing arena which has hosted the Spanish Open twice. Ben P (60pts) extended his lead to 8pts from the pack, which had now bunched to within 3pts of each other; Wallace, Tull & Kitten on 52pts, Sugar 51pts and Bear 48pts. Kitten birdied the Par 4 – 18th (index 2) for 5pts and dragged himself back into the fray, with much muttering from lower handicappers about the ethics of scoring so many points on one fucking hole!

Good times back at base; drunken banter on balcony accompanied by spectacular lightning storms and thunderous disapproval from our Spanish neighbours in the apartment below, whom for some reason took umbrage at Scottish nicotine addicts flicking ash from above. Apologetic heads would peer over the railings to witness distraught parents wiping ash deposits from their wheelchair bound handicapped son, truly one of the low points of any Lola!

Day 3: PGA Catalunya, Tour Course (5546m) – A more gentle golfing experience to the Stadium but no less pleasing on the eye. Good scores ranging from 33-43pts were had by all except the Tullminator who carded what must have been one of his poorest rounds ever in the Lola, 23pts. Scores after 3 rounds were: Ben P 96pts (36), Kitten 95pts (43), Sugar 91pts (40), Bear 87pts (39), Wallace 85pts (33) & Tull 75pts (23).

Day 4: PGA Catalunya, Stadium Course (6104m) – The dashing Yank took his narrow 1pt lead into the final round and doubled it at the first, though a solid outward 9 by Kitten put him 3pts up at the turn in what had now become a two horse race. A birdie at the 15th for the young Scot saw his lead grow to 5pts with just three to play.........  and eventually a wobbly Kitten dragged himself up the 18th to win by just 2pts from Ben P.

A magnificent prize giving was laid on by our Adidas Sponsors and everyone left sporting new footwear including the delighted bar staff!

Final Standings:
1st Kitten 126pts
2nd Ben P 124pts
3rd Sugar Walls Shurgold 115pts
4th The Wallace 113pts
5th The Bear 112pts
Spoon Tullminator 98pts
